Except.my Mac Pro 1,1 can no longer accept them because, as is verified by other Mac Pro owners, the last two security updates will put a Mac Pro 1,1 into an endless reboot loop, and there is no cure or workaround available. OS X 10.11 still gets security updates, that is good. If you cannot get it to run past 10.7, you may not be able to run the "latest" programming packages you mentioned, or at least not on Mac OS. Since you say you never had a Mac before and you have no other Mac, unless you can borrow one I would say it could be a major challenge to get it to run later than its official last supported system, which is 10.7. But I have also been familiar with Macs since the 1980s.
Apple mac pro 2.1 install#
Having a second Mac on hand makes it much easier to install OS X 10.11 plus the hack required to get it running, and to run maintenance. Here are some of the challenges you will face. I've been really happy with it.but that's changing. With OS X 10.11 I can use iMessage and FaceTime as well as my other later Macs.
Apple mac pro 2.1 upgrade#
That is a recent enough upgrade to run most current versions of applications.

Using a well known hack that I (a non-programmer) felt comfortable implementing, I have been upgrading it all the way to OS X 10.11 El Capitan.

I believe the situation is similar for the 2,1. I Would be using it for programming(really important, would I be able to run all up-to-date packages I also consider dual boot with some arch Linux)and music(dont know if it will run newest Logic Pro ?) And would it support all iMessage/FaceTime apps from the desktop?
